Respect for the principle of autonomy has become the hegemonic principle in the practice of clinical ethics during the decision-making process. In Portugal, several instruments and laws have been designed with the aim of protecting patients’ autonomy in chronicity and end-of-life situations. These instruments are useful for making decisions according to the patient’s prior indications, but it is clear from this study that there is a deficiency in medical education on these issues.
